Thematic workshop for humanitarian practitioners

In January, Geneva Call delivered a 2-days thematic workshop on engaging Armed non-State Actors (ANSAs) for humanitarian protection in Bangkok, in collaboration with the International Association of Professionals in Humanitarian Assistance and Protection (PHAP). Twenty mid- and senior level staff of UN agencies, the ICRC, international and local NGOs and government agencies attended. The workshop, which combined lectures with roles playing, exercises and group discussions, reviewed the international legal framework applicable to non-international armed conflicts and the normative basis for humanitarian engagement with ANSAs. It also addressed key concepts, methods and challenges associated with engaging with ANSAs on protection issues. In addition to Geneva Call, speakers from the ICRC and the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) shared their approach and experience.
